START to FASHION MAGS

THE BEGINING OF FASHION MAGAZINES

An important part of the fashion industry is the fashion magazines. The fashion magazines can be a fashion designers bible and an in-look to the upcoming fashions.

At the commencement of the 20th century, fashion magazines began to include photographs of various fashion designs and these people began to become more influential. These magazines were greatly desirable and had a weighty influence on public clothing taste. Artistic illustrators drew wonderful fashion plates for the magazines which had the most up to date fashion and beauty.

Vogue was founded in the United Sates in 1892; it is the most successful fashion magazines. In the 1960s Vogue invested in colour printing which led to a huge boost in sales. This set the Haute couture designers to start a trend by designing ready-to-wear and perfume lines so they could advertise in the magazines.

Fashion television coverage began in the 1950s with small fashion features. In the 1960s and 1970s, fashion segments on various entertainment shows became more frequent. Even with television and increasing internet coverage, fashion magazines coverage remains the most important form of publicity in the eyes of the fashion industry.

Over the past few years fashion websites have taken traditional writing and put it into online magazines. These magazines are sold via digital copies on the internet and on formats to be read on iPod’s, iPad’s and android. This way of reading magazines is coming more and more popular.

INFLUENCE FASHION MAGS

THE INFLUENCE OF EARLY FASHION MAGAZINES

In the 1060s American women could see original designs by fashion designer Charles Frederick Worth, in the popular publication Harper’s Bazaar. By the end of the twentieth century, this was the prime technique of spreading news of the new fashion trends from Paris.

Gowns were first illustrated with drawings. Vogue illustrated as many as 33 models from Paris in each issue, and about twice as many American dresses. Advertisements provided many more images. But as photography became more refined in the early twentieth century, the fashion press used more and more photographs of new designs. Fashion and art began to merge about the same time in the eyes of artists. These artists not only painted but also created textile designs and fashion illustrations.

Vogue operated in America not only to provide sketches and patterns of fashions resulting from Paris models, but also to promote French couture. In America, wearing fashion from Paris would ensure that others would recognize the wearer’s wealthy status. Women liked what they seen in the pages of fashion magazines and were no longer content with dresses that were not recognized with the style of a particular fashion designer.

Today fashion magazines are similar influenced as they have been in the past. They are influenced by popular culture, music and economics. Actor, models and musicians and still showing more influence than world leaders. The world still watches Paris for next season’s fashion.

SUSTAINABLE FASHION

Sustainable fashion is also known as eco fashion and this is part of a growing design movement. The goal is to of which is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of environmentalism and social responsibility.  Sustainable fashion is where a product is created and produced with consideration to the environmental and social impact it may have throughout its total life span, including its "carbon footprint". Fashion designers are now re-introducing eco-conscious methods at the source through the use of environmentally friendly materials and socially responsible methods of production.

The National Association of Sustainable Fashion Designers is one organizations working towards increasing opportunities for sustainable designers. Its purpose is to give assistance to entrepreneurs with growing fashion related businesses that create social change and respect the environment. The organization’s mission is to create change through design and fashion by providing education, training and programs that are transformative to the industry and to cultivate collaboration, sustainability and economic growth.

 Sustainable Materials
·         There are many factors when considering the sustainability of a material:
·         The renew-ability and source of a fiber

·         the process of how a raw fiber is turned into a textile,
·         working conditions of the people producing the materials,
·         The material's total carbon footprint.

FIBRES TO TAKE INTO CONSDIERATION
Natural Fiber’s are found in nature and are not petroleum-based. Natural fibers can be categorized into two main groups, cellulose or plant fiber and protein or animal fiber.
Cotton is one of the most widely grown and chemical-intensive crops in the world. Cotton uses approximately 25% of the world’s insecticides (to prevent bugs) and more than 10% of the world’s pesticides (to kill bugs).
Other cellulose fibers include: Jute, Flax, Hemp, Ramie, Abaca, Bamboo (used for viscose), Soy, Corn, Banana, Pineapple and Beechwood (used for rayon).
Protein: Wool, Silk, Angora, Camel, Alpaca, Llama, Vicuna, Cashmere and Mohair:
Manufactured from natural materials: Lyocell, Polylactic acid or PLA (Corn Polymer)

RENEWABLE FIBRE SOURCE
Recycled or reclaimed fibres are made from scraps of fabrics collected from clothing factories. These fibres are then processed back into short fibres for spinning into a new yarn. There are only a few facilities globally that are able to process reclaim fibres.

Fair trade
Fair trade aims to help producers in developing countries to make better trading conditions and promote sustainability. Fair Trade campaigns for the payment of a higher price to exporters as well as higher social and environmental standards. The movement pays particular attention on exporting handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers and gold from developing countries to developed countries,

MATERIALS
Cotton has a large carbon footprint for its farming and construction. Though organic cotton is considered a more sustainable choice as it is completely free of destructive toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Hemp is one of the best choice for eco fabrics due to its ease of growth, though it illegal to grow in some countries. Though Hemp is derived from the marijuana plant, hemp does not contain the same levels of HTC. This means people are unable to become ‘high’ from smoking hemp. Designers have started experimenting with bamboo fibre, as bamboo absorbs greenhouse gases during its life cycle and grows quickly and plentifully without pesticides. Even bamboo fabric can cause environmental harm in production due to the chemicals used to create a soft viscose from hard bamboo. The use of vintage fabrics and garments are the most sustainable choice, as the raw material requires no agriculture and no manufacturing to produce. A technology known as AirDye which uses synthetic fibers and eliminates all the water from the dyeing and printing process. Though chemicals are still used in making synthetic materials, this method significantly reduces water consumption and pollution, while cotton (organic or not) uses a tremendous amount of water during the growth and dyeing phases.

IMPACT OF BLOGGIN

IMPACT OF BLOGGING
“The impact of bloggers and real-time media has had a profound effect on how designers and media participate in Fashion Week.” - Macala Wright.

A blog is a personal journal published on the internet which contains individual records options, links to other websites and photographs on a regular basis. These posts are typically in reverse chronological order so the most recent post appears first. Blogs are usually the work of a single individual, occasionally of a small group, and often are themed on a single subject.
There was a slow start to blogging but since the 1999 it has rapidly gained in popularity. Fashion blogging is relatively new to cyber space, as they first started to appear in 2002. The main two fashion blogs that began media attention in 2002: LookOnline Daily Fashion Report and She She Me, are still in existence today.

Fashion blogging has rapidly become a highly profitable new media business. This is a mixture of independent blogs and well-funded fashion blog networks competing to dominate. In 2006 Manolo’s shoe blog has confirmed he earns a six-figure salary through blogging.
The number of street fashion blogs that are featuring fashion on real people and showing how trends are applied in the streets around the world in different cities is increasingly high.

FASHION DOLLS

HISTORY OF FASHION DOLLS

                                             It’s a Barbie world.

Fashion dolls are designed to show case the fashion trends of their times. Fashion dolls are manufactured both as toys for children to play with and as collectibles for adult collectors. Dolls are general modeled after teen girls or adult women, though child, male, and even some non-human variants exist. Modern day fashion dolls are typically made of vinyl or another plastic.
The earliest fashion dolls were bisque dolls or porcelain doll from French companies. A bisque doll or porcelain doll is a doll made partially or wholly out of bisque porcelain. Bisque dolls are characterized by their realistic, skin-like matte finish. These dolls dominated the market between approximately 1860 and 1890. These dolls represent grown up women and intended for children from well to do families to play with and dress in of that periods fashions.

Barbie is the most famous fashion doll of all time since her launch by the American toy-company Mattel in 1959. Ruth Handler was the creator behind the Barbie doll.

In 1956 Ruth was on a trip through Europe with her family and she came across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. The adult-like figure was what Ruth was looking for as most children’s dolls were represented my infants. Ruth gave one to her daughter and the other two she took to Mattel.

With well over 50,000 looks Barbie is for sure a fashion doll icon. Mattel has done extremely well to keep Barbie always fashionable and representing the era since her beginnings in 1959. There have been many famous people of the time who have been made into Barbie: Pop singer Britney Spears right through to the recent wedding of Prince William and Princess Kate. Looking at Barbie’s own time line can give an indication of the times not only royal weddings but in the 1960s with astronaut Barbie and the Olympic games just to name a few.

In 2009 Barbie celebrated her 50th birthday with her wardrobe strutting down the New York fashion show runway. The event showcased fashions contributed by fifty well-known haute couturiers including Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, Calvin Klein, Bob Mackie, and Christian Louboutin.

With popularity comes controversy and Barbie has had her fair share. One of the most common criticisms of Barbie is that she promotes an unrealistic idea of body image for a young woman. In 1997, Barbie's body mold was redesigned and given a wider waist, with Mattel saying that this would make the doll better suited to contemporary fashion designs. Though the Barbie line in 2000 had gone back to the old was with a small body waist, defined abs, a collarbone, defined ankles and even cleavage.

My belief is take Barbie for what she is, a beautiful doll with a huge wardrobe who allows little girls to have an imagination and start dreaming of maybe one day going into space or becoming a veterinary. It is not up to a fashion dolls duty to tell the girls their beautiful its up to society. Barbie is there to help girls and boys start their imagination.

MY BARBIE STORY

My childhood best friend Amy and I were huge fans of playing Barbie. We use to play Barbie in the house, out the back shed where ever we could and we would play for hours at a time. Back then Ken was a rarity in a girls Barbie collection as he was more expensive. As many girls we wanted our Barbie to have their own prince charming so with no Ken we had to come up with anther idea. So one hot after-noon in my mates back shed we got one of our old Barbie’s each and cut of their hair. Barbie still had one more asset that had to go... her boobs. Now being plastic (and us not being plastic surgeons) this was not going to go well, well the boobs didn’t go at all. So we were left with two Barbie’s with a real bad hair cuts and a real bad mammaplasty.
